France-Bike, your partner for cycling holidays is pleased to present you this outstanding bike tour along the Werra River in the heart of Germany. From the heights of Rennsteig the picturesque Werra makes its way, jammed between the Rhone and the Thuringian forest. On its way to Hann. Münden, where it unites with the Fulda to form the Weser, the Werra flows past picturesque half-timbered towns, health resorts, residence- and famous culture cities. The cycle trip of about 320 km on fully developed bike paths with little acclivity and uniform as well as brilliant signposting is made to enjoy cycling while riding through beautiful landscapes and passing by lovely towns.
Day 1: Individual arrival in Meiningen
Your journey starts in the historical theatre town of Meiningen.
Day 2: Meiningen - Bad Salzungen, ~43 km/26 miles
After the cycling section today, you see Wasungen with its half-timbered town surrounded by dam walls and you still have enough time to indulge yourself in the health resort Bad Salzungen. Feel the vitalising effect of the unique Celtic bath (the only one in Germany). In the evening you can go and discover the lovely Old Town.
Day 3: Bad Salzungen - Dankmarshausen, ~40 km/25 miles
Today you cycle further between the southern slopes of the Thuringian forest and the impressive round end of the Rhone. Have a break in the historical Old Town of Vacha. You will reach Heringen quickly, which is famous for the Werra-potash-museum. Here you can do trips on the "Monte Kali", the widely visible rock salt heap. Your hotel in Dankmarshausen is located next to the base of this impressive "sugar loaf".
Day 4: Dankmarshausen - Eisenach, ~37 km/23 miles
Many lakes and nature preserves will be on your way along the winding Werra and after a short ride you will reach Eisenach. Take your time for the Wartburg and visit the domain of the famous sons of the town, for example in the house of Luther or Bach.
Day 5: Eisenach - Eschwege, ~58 km/36 miles
It is quite lovely how the river meanders through a splendid low mountain landscape. You pass upright looming potash cliffs and medieval villages and towns. In Creuzburg and Treffurt you should walk through the romantic alleys of the monumental protected Old Town. Eschwege displays a special half-timbered charm, and is your accommodation for today.
Day 6: Eschwege - Hann. Münden, ~59 km/36 miles
Art along the bike lane: sculptures of well-known artists are lined up next to the bank in the Werra-Meißner-land. Have a break in the brine bath of Bad Soden-Allendorf. You cycle through the "land of cherries" around Witzenhausen to Hann. Münden. The town offers a closed medieval townscape and aristocratic castle. You may finish your day with a stroll through the town.
Day 7: Individual departure from Hann. Münden
After breakfast your journey along the Werra ends in Hann. Münden. If you want to you can prolong your trip along the Weser or Fulda.
