Come to Tauern in Austria and discover cultural sights and untouched nature between Krimml and Passau on this bike tour. The Tauern Bike Path is one of Europe's most popular touring routes yet never feels crowded. The route is almost entirely on an asphalt bike path or small side roads and runs through a deep, wide mountain valley in the Alps. Much of the route travels through farmland and small Alpine towns and villages. The bicycle tour passes along the foothills of majestic mountains and the rivers Salzach, Saalach and Inn. Discover the numerous cultural sights and untouched nature of one of Austria´s most beautiful regions. Enjoy the flair of Salzburg and be impressed by the charm of its surroundings.
Day 1: Arrival in Krimml/Wald
Individual arrival in Krimms. Tip: You can hike to the waterfalls, duration ~2-3 hours.
Day 2: Krimml/Wald - Piesendorf/Kaprun/Zell am See, ~53 or 65 km/33 or 41 miles
Via Rosental you cycle towards Neukirchen then to Habachtal, which is famous for its emerald find spots. In Bramberg you should visit the museum. The exposition in Piesendorf is worth seeing it. You are now entering the European sports region Kaprun/Zell am See with the glacier of the Kitzsteinhorn.
Day 3: Piesendorf/Kaprun/Zell am See - Lofer, ~58 or 46 km/37 or 29 miles
You cycle past Bruck towards Taxenbach and Lend. You are going into the valley of Gasteinertal. You will be impressed by the amazing waterfall before arriving in St. Johann and Bischofshofen.
Day 4: Lofer - Salzburg, ~49 km/30 miles
Today you will see the fortresses of Hohenwerfen, and then you are climbing to the col Lueg where you can have a rest for lunch time. After a magnificent descent you are achieving Golling and Hallein. There are not many kilometers left to arrive in Salzburg.
Day 5: Salzburg - Burghausen, ~58 km/36 miles
With Salzburg you leave the world of the Alps and cycle along the lower Salzach to Oberndorf (city where the world-famous song “Silent Night” was created, Stille Nacht Chapel) and Burghausen (city with the greatest castle complex in Europe).
Day 6: Burghausen - Bad Füssing, ~49 km/30 miles
Passing by the point where the Salzach River flows into the Inn River you arrive at Braunau, the largest city of the Inn region. Following the Inn River on a narrow path and crossing through meadows and fields, you reach the thousand-year-old town Obernberg. The remarkable market square is lined with interesting old houses which still retain rococo style.
Day 7: Bad Füssing - Schärding or Passau, ~25 or 43 km/16 or 27 miles
Soon you arrive at Reichersberg with its monastery, seat of the Augustinian monks for more than 900 years. Following the embankment of the river Inn you reach Schärding. Here you can either spend the night or cycle on to Passau, which was listed as one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Worth seeing is the “Drei-Flüsse-Eck” - place where the two rivers Inn and Ilz are leading in the Danube - and the St. Stephans cathedral, where the world’s biggest church organ is located.
