France-Bike, specialist for cycling holidays is proud to present you this outstanding bike tour along the Ruhr River in western Germany. The cycle trip leads through the Ruhr Valley from its spring in Sauerland to the estuarine into the Rhine. Your road leads you over rolling hills and through beautiful forests. The landscape is gently changing when you arrive in the region of Ruhr. The wide plane with lakes and castles are as beautiful as the old houses with framework which are typical for this area of Germany.
Day 1: Arrival in Winterberg
Individual arrival to Winterberg.
Day 2: Winterberg - Around Bestwig, ~35 km/22 miles
You start your tour along the valley of the Ruhr at its spring in Winterberg. Make a first short break in Assinghausen, the village of the roses. There you will find lots of half-timbered houses and an old granary. In the afternoon you will visit the old mine of Ramsbeck. After that you are riding on through the land of thousand hills. But don't be frightened. Today's stage will lead you down the hills.
Day 3: Around Bestwig - Arnsberg, ~45 km/28 miles
Today you ride again along the Ruhr River and through its deep and dark valley. You will be passing the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park before arriving in the town of Arnsberg with its neoclassical quarter and a very beautiful old town.
Day 4: Arnsberg - Fröndenberg, ~40 km/25 miles
After leaving the forest of Arnsberg you come to the Soester Boerde, a very flat region, famous for its wide fields witch are very fructuous. On your way you will ride through small towns like Wickede and Neheim. Enjoy this pleasant bike trip through the fields of the Ruhr valley and make a short visit of the lovely old town of Neheim.
Day 5: Fröndenberg - Witten, ~55 km/34 miles
The Ruhr valley cycle track leads you from the Soester Boerde to the Sauerland which is much forested. Maybe you can see some wisents, the European bison which has been reintroduced here. Visit the old town of Schwerte and its famous mustard mill. You will also be impressed by the quarry of Ebberg and the castle Hohensyburg which you will find on your way, too. You will enjoy cycling along the lakes Hengsteysee and Harkortsee to the town of Herdecke with all its timbered houses.
Day 6: Witten - Around Essen-Kettwig, ~60 km/37 miles
Today's stage leads you through the valley of the Mutte River which was once the cradle of the mining industry of the Ruhr region. The highlight of this day is for sure the industrial museum "Zeche Nachtigall". Here you will find out everything you ever wanted to know about mining in this region. Later you will arrive at the castle ruin of Hardenstein, where you will take a ferry boat to cross the Ruhr River and to come to the lake Kemnader See. Before arriving in Essen you should take a break in the well worth seeing historical old town center of Hattingen.
Day 7: Around Essen-Kettwig - Duisburg, ~30 km/19 miles
This last day on your bike is again full of highlights. You will pass by the lake Baldeney See with lots of sailing ships.
