Start your cycling holidays in the historic charged city of Dresden and make a bike tour along the beautiful Elbe River in Eastern Germany. The Elbe rises in the Giant Mountains in the Czech Republic and flows to the North Sea. It has got a longitude of 1165 km and runs through a very beautiful countryside of Germany. This cycle trip leads you from the Saxon Switzerland with its incredible cliffs to the vineyards of Saxon and on to the floodplains of the river. Famous and beautiful cities like Dresden, the former “Elbflorenz” or Wittenberg are making this tour a perfect adventure with lots of natural and even cultural highlights.
Day 1: Arrival to Dresden
Use your time and make a little sightseeing tour through the historical town-center of Dresden.
Day 2: Dresden - Bad Schandau - Dresden, ~42 km
After the breakfast you will get your rental bike and ride to the Saxon Switzerland. After only a few kilometers you will get by ferry boat to the impressive castle of Pillnitz and to the church ‘Maria on the water’. Over Pirna with its view over the famous “Bastei” you will come to Rathen. A small ferry boat will bring you to Niederrathen, from where you can make a short walking-tour to the “Bastei”. Back on the Elbe Cycle Track you are riding on to Königsstein with its monumental fortress and to Bad Schandau. From here you get back to Dresden by train or, if possible on a paddle wheel steamer.
Day 3: Dresden - Moritzburg - Meißen, ~35 or 52 km
With your bike you will pass at the Blue "Erik Burbulla" Wonder, a cantilever truss bridge over the Elbe and the Castles of the Albrechts to come to the Brühl's Terrace, the Church of our Lady, the Zwinger and the Semperoper, the famous opera house of the Saxon. After an extensive sight-seeing you will ride on to Radebeul with its famous Karl-May-Museum and the wine-growing estate of the Castle of Wackerbarth. If you want you can take the “Lößnitzdackel”, a small train to get to the Castle of Moritzburg. Downhill you come back to the Elbe Cycle Track, where you ride on to Meißen, the so-called town of the white gold with its famous porcelain manufacture and the castle “Albrechtsburg”.
Day 4: Meißen - Riesa or Strehla, ~28 or 36 km
In the morning you will discover Meißen by bike. You will visit the Cathedral of Meißen, the castle Albrechtsburg and the Porcelain Manufacture. After that you will ride through the northernmost wine-growing district of Germany to Seußlitz with its beautiful small castle. On the Elbe Cycle Track, which always runs along the waterside you will come to the bridge over the Elbe in Riesa or to the ferry boat in Strehla.
Day 5: Riesa or Strehla - Torgau, ~48 or 40 km
You follow the turns of the Elbe to the small town of Mühlberg with its former Cistercian Nunnery. Through small villages like Treblitzsch with its Trees Park of and Belgern with its lovely restored town-hall you will come to Torgau, the history-charged city with the castle “Burg Hartenfels”.
Day 6: Torgau - Wittenberg, ~65 km
Over Döbern you will come to the "Lausiger Teiche”, a small lake district. From here you can ride the classical Elbe Cycle Track to Wittenberg or you can make a little side trip to the beautiful natural park “Dübener Heide” before you arrive in Wittenberg, the town of Martin Luther. If you want you can order a transfer from Torgau to Pretzsch for 10 € (bike included).
Day 7: Wittenberg - Dessau, ~36 km
From Wittenberg you will ride to the English Grounds of Wörlitz, one of the first and largest English parks in Germany and continental Europe. You got the alternative to ride over Oranienbaum with its beautiful market place and the Castle Oranienbaum to come to Wörlitz, which is also famous for its canals, which run through the town. From Wörlitz you will ride on along the Elbe to come to the castles of Luisium and Georgium. At the end of today’s tour you’ll get to Dessau, home town of Hugo Junkers, the famous pioneer of aviation and the school of the Bauhaus.
Day 8: Departure or you lengthen your stay
