For those who prefer some longer bike stages without missing the beauty of natural and cultural highlights, France-Bike is presenting this new and outstanding bike tour along the Loire River from Orléans to Nantes. The daily distances are between 70 and 85 kilometers so that even the more trained riders will have enough road to play their favorite game. And of course riding along this majestic river means being in the heart of beautiful green nature. So follow the winding river and discover all the castles, cathedrals, manor houses and fortresses that once were built by the French kings and those who wanted to imitate them. And so it is not by chance that the Loire Valley is part of the UNESCO world heritage. So enjoy cycling holidays where intensive bike riding, gently green nature and outstanding architectonical highlights are melting together in a perfect harmony.
Day 1: Tag: Arrival in Orleans
Discover Orléans, the 'city of art and history', liberated in 1429 by Joan of Arc from the English siege.
Day 2: Orleans - Blois, ~70 km
Ride the 'Loire à Vélo' cycling paths and the Loire River, the last wild river in Europe, to the very flowered city of Beaugency. Then cross the forest of 'Domaine de Chambord' to admire its château, masterpiece of the Renaissance period. Continue en direction de Blois, which presents a rich historical heritage with the château offering a brilliant illustration of the evolution of French architecture from the Middle Ages to the 17th century.
Day 3: Blois - Tours, ~70 km
Follow the small countryside routes until the chateau of Chaumont overlooking the Loire River, before reaching Amboise and its royal chateau from 15th -16th century. Few streets further on is the last home of Leonardo Da Vinci: Manorhouse of ‘Clos Lucé’. Then ride through the vineyards of Montlouis to discover the numerous cellars that offer sweet white or sparkling wines, before reaching Tours and its old quarters sheltering the famous 'Place Plumereau' famous for its half-timbered houses.
Day 4: Tours - Saumur, ~80 km
Departure towards Villandry and its famous French Renaissance Gardens, then proceed to Langeais with its 15th century château offering a typical form of a medieval fortified castle. Still follow the Loire River to the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ château in Ussé before riding through the nice Chinon vineyards! Then follow the Vienne River then the Loire River once again, where stand the beautiful villages of Candes St Martin and Montsoreau. Now ride through some troglodyte sites to reach Saumur.
Day 5: Saumur - Montjean-sur-Loire, ~85 km
This stage allows you to enjoy the exceptional Loire heritage riding through its wild landscapes! After passing near Angers, continue cycling in the vineyards of Anjou: such as Coteaux de l'Aubance. Do not miss to make a stop at Savennière, famous for its dry white wine and proceed to the banks of the Loire at Chalonnes, the confluence of the Rivers Loire and Layon.
Day 6: Montjean-sur-Loire - Nantes, ~75 km
Ride along the banks of the River Loire where you will enjoy the different natural landscapes and observe the wild animals and birds of the river. Enjoy a peaceful ride on the cycling path until to Champtoceaux, in its magnificent setting marking the boundary between Anjou and Brittany. You reach the capital of the western area: Nantes. This very dynamic city will offer you a large choice of visit and you can enjoy a sight-seeing through the numerous pedestrian streets.
Day 7: Departure from Nantes
Back to Orléans by train after the breakfast. An organized transfer is possible on request.
