Limburg, with its more than 1800 km long and almost traffic-free cycle paths with excellent quality, very good signs and an excellent restaurant is a true cycling paradise. The region is famous for its innumerable varieties of flan (fruit cake), chocolate, the Limburger cheese and some 750 Belgian beers.
This combined bike & boat tour with electric bike begins and ends in the historic Maastricht, the cultural capital of Limburg. The ship lies in close proximity to the convention center where the Treaties of Maastricht was signed. The castle (residence) of the famous violinist Andre Rieu is just around the corner.
The salon yacht Miro is during your trip your luxurious floating hotel that you accompanies and provides a comfortable home without the daily packing. You will cycle or walk leisurely without any baggage, until you meet at the agreed location on the ship again. Of course you can skip a bike tour and enjoy a wonderful boat trip on board with a book or just relax in a comfortable chair on the deck. There is always enough time for a walk, to visit a museum or a nice sightseeing!
Day 1: Maastricht - Liège, ~27 km/17 miles
Individual arrival in Maastricht and embarkation at midday in the harbor of Pietersplas, where you also can park your car in a car park that is under video surveillance. You will get a "welcome-drink“ and we will adjust your bikes and give you some information about the tour at about 1 p.m. Afterwards the boat starts in direction of Liège, through the valley of Visé to Monsin. In Liège-Angleur we anchor in the historical center. In the evening we will have dinner in town and there is the possibility to have a guided tour through the town with the captain. And for sure, he’ll take you to the famous café "Chantant Le Jardin des Olliviette", where you can enjoy delicate coffee while listening to typical Belgian and French folk music.
Day 2: Angleur - St. Pietersvoeren - Kanne, ~27 or 45 km/16 or 28 miles
After breakfast you’ll have enough time to visit the well-known Sunday market “La Batte”, the biggest market of Belgium. Afterwards your boat will bring you out of Liege and on to Angleur, from where you’ll start your first bike trip. The stage leads you through the valley of the river Meuse to Kanne The captain will come along with you for a while to show you the way and to give you some information about the surroundings. Rejoining the ship it's time for tea and coffee. The boat stays in Kanne for the night. Discover the area as you wish or visit a grotto by the guidance of your captain.
Day 3: Lanaken - Rekem - Maasmechelen, ~25 or 45 km/15 or 28 miles
The day starts with a wonderful breakfast boat cruise and tour briefing. The captain has already brought your bike from the ship and checked the tire pressure. Our tour takes us through a charming world of legendary castles, wondrous tales and a mysterious past. Ancient stories play out here in front of a fairytale setting with sweet flowers, harvest fresh fruit and endless vistas. The country Haspengau draws you into its spell and will not let you go again. We visit the medieval castle ruins Pietersheim, the pearl of Limburg and formerly the main palace complex between the Loire and the Rhine and head after a nice boat trip to Maasmechelen where we moor and stay overnight. Dinner is in Rekum or Maasmechelen. In the evening you can go for a leisurely walk or taking the afternoon to a fun shopping trip into chic Maasmechelen Village Outlet Center.
Day 4: Bree - Achel - Stevensweert, ~28 or 43 km/17 or 26 miles
Discover the diversity of Limburg on today’s stage through the national park of Hoge Kempen. On brilliant bike lanes you’ll ride through mysterious wood and over huge dunes. You’ll come along an imposing marsh and you’ll even cycle through a desert! We visit the old Benedictine abbey with Achel Abbey Brewery. Don't forget to taste the dark abbey beer and the cheese! And all along the way you’ll find lovely small restaurants and cafés that invite you to stay for a while. And if you don’t want to ride that long today, you can shorten the stage and take the boat that you’ll meet along the way. In the late afternoon you will sail to the old fortress town Stevensweert.
Day 5: Thorn - Maaseik - Thorn, ~32 or 49 km/20 or 30 miles
While you are having breakfast on the sun deck, the MIRÓ is taking you for a ride on small canals and through beautiful landscapes. Today’s cycle tour leads you along the river Maas. You’ll pass by typical Limburg farms and lakes before coming to the splendid town of Maaseik. This might be the right place to convince himself of the high standard of Belgian gastronomy. And don’t miss to taste the famous Belgian chocolate. It’s so delicious. Afterwards you’ll follow your way back that will lead you to the white town of Thorn that is famous for its museums. The Miro, your swimming hotel is waiting for you on the landing stage just outside the city walls. The beach of Thorn is famous for its white sand and its crystal clear water that invites to swim. This evening the ship’s crew offers a festive captains dinner on board of the Miro (not included). Or discover the town by yourself. And we can assure that in the lively port of Thorn and its surroundings you’ll find everything to spend an impressive evening.
Day 6: Thorn - Maastricht, ~40 km/25 miles
The morning sun will accompany you and the Miro on your way over quit lakes to the shipping village of Maasbracht. Here you’ll enter the Julian Canal by passing a huge sluice. Coming to the town of Born you’ll start today’s bike tour. And like every day, the crew still has checked and prepared your bicycle for the following ride that will lead you passing by lots of imposing apple gardens to the village of Elslo with its beautiful castle that is definitely worth a visit. And here you’ll also find some lovely small restaurants for having dinner. Afterwards you’ll ride on through the wood before arriving in the historic town of Maastricht. In the evening the harbor taxi will bring you to the historic town center. On Thursday shops and museums are open until 9 o’clock so that you should use your time to discover as much as possible. Being back on board of your boat in the late evening we’ll have a last drink together by the shine of candle lights.
Day 7: End of the tour and departure
After having breakfast you will leave the boat at 10.00 a.m. Extra nights are possible on demand.
