Carinthia is the southernmost province of Austria and has the most hours of sunshine per year in the whole country. That makes it a perfect destination for cycling holidays. And the Carinthia country side is really worth to be seen. On your bike you will discover all the beautiful lakes around the Spittal Valley and the romantic landscapes along the Drau River. Medieval towns like Villach, Klagenfurt and Sankt Veit are waiting for you with their cultural treasures and their charming way of live, so that it is easy to enjoy this bike tour on the sunny side of Austria.
Day 1: Individual arrival in Spittal
Come to Spittal and enjoy the charming atmosphere of this medieval town. And don’t miss to visit the Porcia Castle, which is one of the most significant Renaissance buildings in Austria.
Day 2: Spittal - Villach, ~55 km/34 miles
This first stage of your cycling holidays leads you along Lake Millstättersee and through the Gegendtal Valley to the lively town of Villach. Take the time to stroll around in the heart of the town or make a boat trip on the nearby Drava River.
Day 3: Villach - St.Veit, ~56 km/35 miles
After breakfast you start today’s bike trip by riding along the Lake Ossiachsee to the lovely small town of Feldkirchen. After a short brake you ride on through the Glantal Valley from where you can make a little detour to the Lake Maltschachersee if you want. Finally you arrive in Sankt Veit, the oldest town of Carinthia.
Day 4: St. Veit - Lake Wörthersee, ~30 km/19 miles
Today’s stage is a short one so that you have enough time for an extensive stroll through the beautiful historic town center of Sankt Veit. Especially the main square, famous for its flowers, is absolutely worth to be seen. Afterwards you are riding through the fertile plains of the Zollfeld which once was the border line between the Duchies of Bavaria and Carinthia. Passing by the ‘Duke’s Chair’ and the cathedral in Maria Saal you finally arrive in the Corinthian capital Klagenfurt on the banks of the Lake Wörthersee.
Day 5: Lake Wörthersee - Keutschach Lakes Valley - Rosegg, ~42 km/26 miles
From the Lake Wörthersee you cycle in the morning to the beautiful town of Viktring. Afterwards you will enter the Valley of the Keutschacher Lakes which is famous for its idyllic country side. Take a break on one of the numerous lakes for a romantic lunch break and enjoy the fascinating scenery before continuing along the Rosental Valley to Rosegg and Mühlbach, where you will spend the night.
Day 6: Rosegg - Lake Faaker - Villach, ~39 km/24 miles
On the ‘Drauradweg’, the cycle track along the Drava River you ride to Sankt Niklas. A short uphill section leads you to the banks of the Lake Faaker which you will follow from here until you arrive in Villach, which is a lively and dynamic town and the second largest town of Carinthia, too.
Day 7: Villach - Spittal, ~58 km/36 miles
This last stage back to Spittal leads you again along the Drava River. So for the last time you can enjoy the splendid view of the Alps at the horizon.
