Save tour as PDF Print tour
from 775 € Per person

France-Bike, your partner for cycling holidays in France is pleased to present you this outstanding bike tour in Brittany. The construction of the Canal from Nantes to Brest was initiated under the reign - or dictatorship - of Napoleon but continued during a great part of the 19th century. This canal curls through the center and the heart of Brittany which is rather unknown to many tourists. Nevertheless, the mystic center of Brittany is really worth to be discovered by bike! And the canal leads you to medieval towns and villages, to impressive castles like Josselin and to manors hidden in their parks. The Breton churches and chapels with their typical calvarias, all built in granite welcome you all along your cycle trip. You won't encounter any cars but rather elves and other Breton mythical creatures. During the whole itinerary you'll stay in little and familial hotels with much atmosphere. You can book this bike vacation only in B&B, but you'll receive precise information over the good restaurants known for the quality of their cuisine.

Day 1: Arrival in Redon
Individual arrival in Redon. Take a walk around the old town. Welcome meeting and handout of rental bikes (if rented).
Day 2: Redon - Josselin, ~65 km/40 miles
It is in Redon, where the first bike tour begins. Explore the small town of Malestroit with a lot of Breton charm and then follow the canal to medieval Josselin with numerous wooden houses, dominated by the impressive castle.
Day 3: Josselin - Pontivy, ~50 km/30 miles
The bike and the canal lead you to Pontivy and its castle. Picnic on the bank or eat a crepe in one of the excellent Crêperies!
Day 4: Pontivy - Rostrenen, ~65 km/40 miles
Leaving Pontivy the Nantes Brest canal rejoins the canalized Blavet River to take you to Guerlédan Lake. On arrival at the dam, a former railway takes you to the lakeside. At the Bon Repos abbey you rejoin the towpath along the canal. After the village of Gouarec, the canal leaves the Blavet following the Doré River cycling through the nature reserve Lan Berne to Glomel. The landscape along the canal is very wild and home to, among other things 400 different plants and 70 species of birds. Otters can also be seen here. Your path leads you on to the quarries of Glomel where 'Bagnards' (prisoners) excavated in terrible conditions.
Day 5: Rostrenen - Châteauneuf du Faou, ~55 km/34 miles
After Glomel western Finistere opens out. Visit the impressive flight of 44 locks near Carhaix then the little river Aulne accompanies you, on whose banks many anglers patiently wait for trout and pike.
Day 6: Châteauneuf-du-Faou - Chateaulin, ~45 km/27 miles
The last bike ride takes you to Châteaulin. Looking to the distant peaks of the Monts d'Arrée you reach Guily Glaz, the last canal lock before the sea.
