The Champagne wine region invites you for a beautiful bike holiday through this historic province in France that is famous for its sparkling white wines. EU law and the laws of most countries reserve the term „Champagne„ exclusively for wines that come from this region located about 100 miles (160 km) east of Paris. Each year between 330 and 400 billion bottles are produced and sold all over the world. To mention some famous names: Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, Moët & Chandon, Piper-Heidsieck, Lanson, Taittinger ... But you can also discover other 'highlights' such as Reims, with its buildings classed UNESCO world heritage since 1991: The Gothic cathedral Notre-Dame, the archbishop's palace Tau and the former abbey Saint-Rémy. The bike tour leads you through beautiful landscapes with vineyards and picturesque villages.
Day 1: Arrival in Reims
Arrive individually at your hotel in Reims in the afternoon. The hotel’s reception will give you a tour package with all the necessary instructions and the essentials to have a successful tour. Afterwards you should visit the Gothic cathedral, the archbishop's palace and the Saint-Rémy abbey in Reims.
Day 2: Reims > Châlons-en-Champagne, ~55 km (34 miles)
After the breakfast you start cycling towards Tours-sur-Marne, passing typical vineyards and villages of the wine area around Reims, the so called ‘Montagne de Reims’.
Day 3: Châlons-en-Champagne > Épernay, ~35 km (22 miles)
Today’s stage is a short and easy ride to Epernay, alongside the Marne canal. So you will have enough time in the afternoon to visit some of the most impressive cellars in Epernay, where you will also stay overnight.
Day 4: Round trip to Marne Valley, ~39 km (24 miles)
Today's stage will lead you to the west of Epernay in the Marne Valley, the region planted with grape varieties of Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir.
Day 5: Round trip to ‘Côte des Blancs’, ~41 km (25 miles)
You will cycle to the south of Epernay, into the area planted with chardonnay grape varieties that are used for the production of «champagnes Blanc de Blancs», guarantee of delicacy, freshness, finesse and elegance for the champagne.
Day 6: Épernay > Reims, ~39 km (24 miles)
After breakfast, you will make your way through the ‘Montagne de Reims’ back to Reims, the town where the French kings had been crowned since the 12th century.
